The best affiliate marketing platforms fall into three main families, and the smartest strategy for a creator is to combine them rather than pick just one. Here is how to find your way around.
1. The generalists (to get started)
The Amazon Associates program is the ideal starting point: universal catalog, an audience that already shops there, free sign-up. The commissions are modest — often on the order of 1 to 10% depending on the product category — and the cookie is short (about 24 hours): if your follower doesn't buy that day, the sale doesn't come back to you. In exchange, it's the most accessible platform: sign-up is free and doesn't necessarily require a website (an active Instagram, TikTok or YouTube account is generally enough to apply), and payout kicks in from a small threshold. If you're just starting out, begin by becoming an Amazon affiliate.
2. Affiliate networks
Networks group hundreds of brands under a single interface: you sign up once, then apply to the programs that interest you. The best known worldwide are ShareASale, CJ Affiliate (Commission Junction), Impact, Rakuten Advertising and Awin — plus regional networks (for example Awin is especially strong in Europe). Signing up to the network is most often free; it's then each brand that approves your application to its program. Upside: varied brands and commissions generally higher than Amazon, with cookie durations that are often longer. Downside: case-by-case approval can take a few days, and some brands require an already-active audience.
The main networks, one by one
- ShareASale — one of the most beginner-friendly networks, with thousands of merchants spanning fashion, home, software and niche e-commerce. Clear interface, low payout threshold, and many brands approve creators quickly — a great first network after Amazon. (Now part of Awin.)
- CJ Affiliate (Commission Junction) — one of the oldest and largest networks, international, with many major retail, travel and tech brands. Advanced tracking and reporting; more geared toward creators who already have some volume.
- Impact — a modern partnership platform used by a lot of well-known consumer and SaaS brands. Polished dashboard and clean tracking; increasingly the place where bigger brands run their programs.
- Rakuten Advertising — a historic international network, strong on big-name fashion and retail brands. Often premium programs, but affiliate selection can be more demanding. Ideal when your audience already follows well-known retailers.
- Awin — one of the largest networks, especially strong in Europe but global in reach. Huge, varied catalog (fashion, travel, finance, tech), clear interface. Note: sign-up sometimes requires a small advance refunded on the first payment, and approval by brand can be selective.
- Skimlinks — a different model: instead of generating links one by one, it automatically turns the brand mentions in your content into affiliate links across thousands of merchants. Handy if you publish a lot of written content and don't want to manage each link by hand.
No need to sign up for all of them: pick one global network (ShareASale or CJ, for example) and, if relevant, one regional network strong where your audience lives, depending on the brands they already know.
3. Direct brand programs
Many brands (beauty, fashion, tech) have their own affiliate program, sometimes managed in-house, sometimes through a network. These are often the best paid and the most relevant if you specialize in a niche, because the brand has an interest in retaining the creators who genuinely talk about its products. The method to find them is simple: type "[brand name] + affiliate program" into Google, or head to the bottom of the brand's site (the "Affiliation," "Partners" or "Affiliates" links are often in the footer). If nothing exists officially, contact the brand directly: many open a partnership on simple request when your audience matches their target.
| Family | Commission | Cookie duration | Difficulty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generalists (Amazon) | Low (often a few %) | Short (~24h) | Very easy | Getting started, large catalog |
| Networks (Awin, Rakuten, CJ) | Variable, often higher than Amazon | Medium (~30 days depending on the brand) | Medium (case-by-case approval) | Diversifying brands |
| Direct programs | Often the highest | Variable depending on the brand | Variable (direct contact / application) | Creators specialized in a niche |
The best programs by niche
The most profitable isn't "the" universal platform, but the programs aligned with what your audience already buys. Here are examples to go after (to verify case by case — these are leads, not commission guarantees):
- Beauty & skincare: Sephora, Ulta, Lookfantastic, Cult Beauty, or the in-house programs of skincare brands.
- Fashion & accessories: ASOS, Zalando, Nike, Adidas, and marketplaces like Shein for the low-price segment.
- Tech & electronics: the programs of manufacturers and specialized stores (computing, audio, gaming), often through a network.
- Home & decor: furniture retailers and generalist marketplaces like AliExpress or Temu for small items.
- Travel: Booking, GetYourGuide for activities, and Amazon for luggage and travel accessories.
Tip: for each one, search "[brand] + affiliate program" to find either the direct program or the network that manages it.
Do you have to pay to sign up?
No — and this is an important point. Signing up for an affiliate platform is almost always free. The platform charges you nothing: it earns its money by taking a share of the commissions paid by brands. This is true for Amazon Associates, for the big networks (ShareASale, CJ, Impact, Rakuten, Awin) and for regional networks alike. If a "program" asks you for an entry fee or a subscription to become an affiliate, treat it as a red flag: real platforms pay you, they don't make you pay.
The criteria for comparing two platforms
Beyond the network's name, it's the terms of each program that make the difference. Before signing up, look at:
- The commission rate — the percentage you earn on each sale. Compare it at equivalent category: 10% at one brand isn't necessarily worth more than 5% at another if the average basket is twice as high.
- The cookie duration — the window during which a purchase is attributed to you after the click. At equal commission, a 30-day cookie mechanically earns more than a 24-hour one.
- The catalog — are the brands your audience already knows present? A big network without your brands is useless to you.
- The threshold and payment method — from what amount are you paid, and how (bank transfer, PayPal)? A high threshold can lock up your first earnings for several months.
- The approval terms — some brands accept everyone, others require an already-active audience or a website. Check that you meet the criteria before applying.
The ideal isn't "the" best platform in absolute terms, but the one whose catalog fits your niche with reasonable terms.
How to choose: the simple rule
- Just starting out? Amazon + one brand you love. No more.
- Scaling up? Add a network (ShareASale, CJ or Awin) for variety.
- Specialized? Target the direct programs of brands in your niche, which are better paid.
Whatever the platform, the affiliate link is only a starting point. What makes the difference is the presentation. A recommendation card with your review and your promo code converts far better than a bare link.
Centralize, whatever the platform
The advantage of a link-in-bio page is that it's agnostic: Amazon, Awin, a direct program, your personal code… you drop any affiliate link into a card. Spotilink groups all your affiliate links in one place, without depending on any particular store — and without taking a commission on your affiliate earnings.
Every link becomes a reco card (your photo, your take, your promo code) that makes people want to click — and when a brand wants to go further, you can even sell them a paid brand deal right on your page (collab included from the free plan).
